From the dust jacket: Part of the Land, Part of the Water is a history of the native peoples of the Yukon. Written for a general audience by an eminent anthropologist, the book assembles in lucid and readable form the insights of modern geology, archaeology, ethnology and documentary history, along with a rich harvest of oral history and mythology told in the eloquent voices of Yukon Indians themselves. Land claims, native languages, traditional hunting and fishing techniques, shamanism, the traditional life cycle and other topics are explored in rich detail. The pervading theme is the adaptation of traditional cultures to a constantly changing and challenging world, not merely in the present century but over many thousands of years.
